axioms: The human population will continue to expand, eventually reaching the limits of what Earth can support. Extra-terrestrial colonization (Earth orbit, Luna, Mars, the asteroid belt) will take place. Biologically, life will function normally in these environments. Off-world populations will grow.

project: I am proposing the design of a city for one million on Mars.

questions: How do we negotiate between person-scale and city-scale? This is a question to be answered in any urban project, but one particularly apropos when the city is omnipresently inclusive. How do we navigate dense urban structures? What are the modes of transportation? How are the contrasting programs of home, work, and leisure sequenced in a completely integrated environment? How is adaptability and change of use accommodated? How is ‘natural’ space differentiated from built space when nature is necessarily internal? What is our level of interaction with the truly natural, but hostile, landscape? And how is it mediated by the architecture?
